Weekly Village News for May 1, 2026

From Frank...

May is Older Americans Month! The theme for 2026 is “Champion Your Health” which focuses on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging. Earlier today, I participated in the DC Dept. of Aging & Community Living’s “Roll, Stroll, and Run” event. Above is my picture with DACL’s Director, Charon P.W. Hines, who gave out medals to all attendees. It was a fun event (and a great opportunity for me to go for a run) and I especially enjoyed seeing so many older adults joining in on the fun, including a 91-year-old gentleman, who proudly walked and jogged the full three-kilometer course!

Here's a gentle reminder that every week we have several wellness opportunities. On Saturdays, our walking group meets at the 9:30 outside of the Giant at Cathedral Commons. It’s a wonderful way to start your Saturday with a group of committed walkers! There’s a pace for everyone on the 45-minute walk so please come out and join the group. Then on every Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:00 am, we host a virtual stretching class with Beth Kaplan. It’s only a half hour but it’s geared for all levels and is a great way to get your day started. When we’re in our new Village Square, we hope to make this a hybrid event where folks who want to gather in-person can come and take the class and see Beth on the big screen TV…and then perhaps have a coffee or tea afterwards. There’s lots going on to prepare our new Square to open! Here are a few pictures below to give you an idea of what’s happening. We’re busy painting, putting in new carpet and tile, and buying furniture! It’s going to be terrific, and I cannot wait to invite you all to events there. Stay tuned for details on when we will be open, but in the interim, please be on the lookout for your mailed calendar of events and register for those that interest you.

Note that while many events, such as Sunday Suppers, concerts, and Tuesday Talks, are open to everyone in the community, there are others that are offered exclusively to members and volunteers. Joining as a member is simple! Just visit www.cwpv.org/join and look at our two types of membership, social and Members Plus. As a reminder, our Board has made a commitment to offer a free membership to anyone with a financial need. That is, anyone with an annual adjusted gross income of $50,000 or less may receive a free membership. So, please don’t let finances be a reason why you’re not joining our Village.

Again, happy Older Americans Month. In just a few short months, yours truly will turn 60 so, I too, will proudly be an “older adult” even though I still feel like a kid! Isn’t that an odd thing about aging: in our minds, we are still young (but with decades of experience.) Please enjoy all the news, programs, and events and the latest May news right here.
