One of our most important annual events is taking place next Friday, our Balance Assessment Clinic. In partnership with Pivot Physical Therapy, the Village offers this free clinic to anyone in the community. For the second year, Adas Israel Congregation will host the event and Joe Oppenheimer and Edie Frasier are our generous sponsors. I really want to underscore the importance of fall prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), "Every second of every day, an older adult (age 65+) suffers a fall in the U.S.—making falls the leading cause of injury and injury death in this age group. One out of four older adults will fall each year in the United States, making falls a public health concern, particularly among the aging population."
I can tell you from personal experience with my mother that falls are scary and can have significant consequences. In my mother's case, she cracked her femur, but the recovery at 91 proved difficult and being in the hospital in strange surroundings likely caused her dementia to progress faster than it would have otherwise. But falls are not inevitable and prevention is important. In addition to registering for our Balance Assistance Clinic, where you'll meet with physical therapists from Pivot Physical Therapy, you can also read here how to prevent falls.
Please note that our other free community event, a concert tomorrow at Rosedale Conservancy, has been moved indoors to the undercroft (lower level) of All Souls Episcopal Church at 4pm. All Souls is located at 2300 Cathedral Avenue, and the undercroft is reached from the back of the building. There are both stairs and an elevated available. So, get out of the forecasted rain, and come join us from 4-6pm to hear the group of NIH Directors (cleverly named Fizzy Lifting Drinks after the iconic scene in Willy Wonka) play rock, folk, classic sing-a-longs, and originals. Please register online so that we can ensure that there's room for everyone.
Be sure to check out all of our upcoming programs and try to find something of interest. I hope to see you soon!
