From Frank ... | Apr 23

This week is National Volunteer Week and I’d like to give a virtual shout out to ALL of our wonderful volunteers that make a difference in so many ways to so many people!

Before I wax on about how spectacular our volunteers are, I want to announce that we are giving away three gift certificates to our volunteers! The first one will be given to the first volunteer to email me at frank@cwpv.org and tell me of your favorite volunteer experience and how it touched you. The second gift certificate will be given to the last email that I receive before Monday morning at 10:00 am. The final gift certificate will be given to the 7th email that I receive (because I’m seventh in my family and that’s my favorite number, if you must know!) The lucky winners will be given either a gift certificate to Transcendence-Perfection-Bliss of the Beyond or a Cleveland Park Bucks gift card because we like to support our local businesses.

Let me say that it’s impressive to write that in all of 2020, our volunteers (many of whom are also members!) performed nearly 1,000 acts of kindness and made 2,350 check-in calls, especially important during the pandemic, just to see how people were coping and if they needed anything. But in addition to these direct services, countless volunteers serve on committees, including the board of directors, do administrative work, represent us on social media, and generally help make things hum behind the scenes. So, all volunteers, please accept my gratitude on behalf of all the Villagecommunity.

Upcoming Events

I’d also like to call your attention to a few special programs that are coming up this week:

  • Slow Mindful Yoga. Sunday at noon, we will have a new hour-long fitness class, Slow Mindful Yoga by Cleveland Park resident and fitness instructor, Beth Kaplan.

  • Black Artists Tour. Thursday at 11am, please join us for a docent-led, virtual tour of black artists and their work at the National Portrait Gallery. Click here to register for the event or call the office at 202-615-5853.

  • Outdoor Concert at Maret. Saturday, May 1, from 1-3pm, we’ll have an outdoor concert on the lawn of the Maret School (3000 Cathedral Ave in Woodley Park). Come hear Bobby McCoy and his band sing your favorite songs of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Registration is required and if we get more than 50 registrants, we’ll have two, shorter concerts so that everyone can participate (as we are limited to a maximum of 50 people at any gathering.) Click here to register or call the office at 202-615-5853.

  • Second Chapter Book Club. The Second Chapter Book Club (which meets the third Monday of the month at 2pm) will be discussing Beloved by Toni Morrison (May 17th) and My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante (June 21). There is room in the book club for a few more members and they will be meeting in person for those fully vaccinated! So, let's all get reading!

Again, thank you to all our Village volunteers and volunteers everywhere. Have a great and safe weekend!
