Weekly Village News for June 12, 2026!

From Frank...

With the Village Square now open, I feel so much pride for what we’ve created. Just today, some folks gathered for an impromptu afternoon of ping pong and Boggle. The sight of folks eyeing the letters and silently writing down words brought me back to the 1970s when my father, sisters, and I huddled around our dining table playing the same game. My father, for whom I was named, was a fierce competitor and gave no ground to his young children. It was a dog-eat-dog world in those hours between when we finished our spaghetti and meatballs and before Wild Kingdom came on. Some of my sisters say that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree, in that I was just as competitive as my father! I won’t say they’re wrong, but I digress from my main point. That is, there’s nothing like seeing people enjoying themselves. It warms my heart.

With our Village Square, we have what is, in essence, a community living room. A place to gather, enjoy one another’s company, share stories, and make friends. The Square is open Monday through Friday from 9am until 5pm, but we’ll be open at other times for events. So, please make a point to stop by sometime soon to check out our new digs. Also, remember to peruse the calendar of events and register for those that are of interest to you. You can find the calendar here.

A few notes about upcoming events:

  • We still have some spots open for our Sunday Supper, this Sunday at 5pm at All Souls Episcopal. Lillies Italian Restaurant will be catering a meal of herbed chicken, rice, grilled veggies, salad, and dessert. It’s free and open to any older adult in the neighborhood. Our Men’s Lunch will be on Monday at Cactus Cantina in Cathedral Commons.

  • Coffee and Conversation will be held at the Village Square on Tuesday at 11. This is a casual gathering with no specific agenda of items to be discussed. Sometimes, the conversation is about a current events or politics, and other times about a recent trip. Whatever the group wishes to discuss is fine. Some come enjoy some coffee or tea and other Villagers.

  • On Wednesday at noon, a group will gather at 2pm to play cards and board games. This is in a private residence in Woodley Park (and the address is provided once you register.). Then, later on Wednesday at 7pm via Zoom, we’ll have our second seminar on Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

  • Later in the month, we’ll have a musical performance by member, Frank Della-Penna, a tour of the Capital Jewish Museum, our inaugural movie night, and then a member social. I hope that you join us for an upcoming event or even a casual visit to the Square. Read all about Village Square news, events, programs, game days, and much more right here!

— Frank Finamore, Executive Director

P.S. I’ll admit that if you come to the Square and we play a game, I’m going to try to win!
