From Frank...
One thing that I know about myself is that I've always been a planner. I was reminded of this recently when I was reviewing my life insurance policy and saw that I first took out the policy when I was just 22 years old! A good friend of mine, Nancy, used to make fun of me because I am such a planner that when I go to the grocery store, I always have a list. The funny thing to her is that if I purchase something not on my list, I add it to the list and then cross it off! In any event, lists and plans seem to be part of my DNA and what helps me get things done and have peace of mind, the latter being the most important driver, I think.
So, why am I telling you this? Well, first because of the forecast. It's good to plan for emergencies, including weather events. Hopefully, everyone has sufficient groceries, batteries/flashlights, blankets, etc. It's also likely a good idea to keep your cell phone fully charged in the event of a power outage. You might also make a pact with a friend or family member to check in with each other periodically. The Village office closes when the federal government closes, but we will be monitoring the phone messages and helping to deploy volunteers, when possible, to handle emergency requests.
The other reason to talk about planning is that many people don't want to do it, especially for the big stuff, such as assigning a power of attorney, completing a Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment (MOST) form. These are just some of the things that every individual should consider having. On February 3rd at 1pm at the Cleveland Park Congregational UCC at 3400 Lowell Street, NW, across from Eaton Elementary School, I'll be presenting a session with Christine Bitzer from Seabury on "Planning for the Ages." Topics will include care management, aging in community, residential options, living wills and DRs, decluttering, and local resources. Afterward, we'll gather for refreshments. You can also participate online via Zoom. Please register, whether attending in person or online, here.
As I've mentioned previously, in my capacity as Executive Director, I come across a lot of situations. The most gut-wrenching ones are those when someone doesn't plan, fails to complete the appropriate documents, and then some tragedy strikes and someone else, including court appointed guardians, are deciding things. I urge you to attend the upcoming session to determine what documents you need to put in place now, how the Village might fit into your overall plan for aging, and where to go for more resources.

Stay safe and warm.
— Frank Finamore, Executive Director
P.S. As for me, I'd prefer extreme heat to a forecast that includes any amount of snow!
