From Frank...

I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year! Like some of you who experienced a loss, 2025 was a hard year for me given the passing of my mother. You’d think that since she was nearly 95 and had Alzheimer’s for many years that I’d have been more prepared, especially given that I had experienced “anticipatory grief” during the many years of her cognitive decline. But it turns out, in my opinion, that a great loss is still a loss that is felt deeply, even when expected. Unfortunately, we also lost a few members, including Muriel Dobbin, Clark Madigan, and Jinny Stern. It’s always sad and hard to say goodbye to friends and family, including those from our Village family.
Despite these losses, I am looking forward to this new year and new possibilities that it brings. I was struck by something that I read from the author and podcaster, Mel Robbins. She said “you strengthen your future when you acknowledge that your most meaningful moments came from connection, and you intentionally plan time with the people who keep your life grounded in good.” For me, many of those meaningful moments come from the interactions with Village members, volunteers, and supporters. I love that on my walking commute from Woodley Park to Cleveland Park, I always run into someone associated with the Village.
These connections certainly fuel my enthusiasm for what we can do together in the new year! In January alone, we have some fun activities planned and listed below. I encourage members to find an activity or two of interest and then commit to participating. Just click the registration button or call the Village office at 202-615-5853.
Finally, one area that we’re hoping to expand is informal gatherings. That is, we’re looking to find some hosts for events such as pot luck dinners, birthday parties, or special events, such as the Superbowl or the Academy Awards. Would you be willing to host an event in your residence or building’s party room? If so, please let us know by email or call the Village office at 202-615-5853.
Together, let’s make 2026 about more connections and meaningful moments. I don’t know about you, but at nearly 60, I don’t need any more stuff. In fact, I’m constantly trying to get rid of stuff. But sharing a meal, a laugh, or just a special moment with someone else is what nourishes me. Hoping that the Village in this new year facilitates those connections for many, along with all of our great practical support for those that need a little help from a neighbor.
