From Frank ... one thing I've learned in two years

The Village is an Incredible Team

This week marks two years since I began as the Executive Director, just six weeks prior to the pandemic beginning here in Washington. I won’t drone on about my reflections on the past two years, but will say that the single greatest benefit to my job is the new friends that I’ve made along the way. Although I’ve lived in Woodley Park for nearly two decades, I’ve never known so many neighbors and everyone is so interesting and inspiring. Being a part of this community nourishes my soul.

In the two years I've been with the Village I've come to rely on the incredible team of behind the scenes supporters who play critical roles, such as our board of directors. These eleven people work tirelessly and give their time, talent, and treasure because they believe in our mission. Others serve on committees and do such things as plan our outreach efforts, organize volunteer appreciation events, or plan a cultural outing. Of course, Claire, our Assistant Director, also works hard to develop our newsletters, coordinate volunteers with members who request services, and much, much more.

Make the Village Part of Your List of New Year Resolutions

You know I’m not much for making resolutions, but it is January and so perhaps I’ll offer you a challenge for the new year: Would you resolve to serve our Village community? Here are some of the behind-the-scenes roles that we seeking to have filled:

  • Donor and volunteer communication (like newsletters)

  • Event planning and support for our events, auctions or concerts

  • Work with local media to spread the word about the Village

  • Help us identify and nurture sponsors to underwrite the costs of our newsletter and operations.

  • Plan and facilitate social events, such as a book club, online discussions or a walking tour of our neighborhood.

  • Represent the Village at neighborhood events and gatherings, such as farmers markets or community events.

  • Coordinate with other community organizations and faith communities.

I learned early on in my life (thanks to my mother) that by giving, we actually receive a lot in return. Are you ready to give a little bit of your time and talent for our community? For those that aren’t already a volunteer, our next virtual training is on Tuesday, January 11 at 5:30 pm. Registration is easy and it’s the first step to making a difference in someone life and in yours!
