From Frank...
The holiday season is upon us! Our annual Village Holiday Party will be on Wednesday, December 17th from 2 until 4pm at the Broadmoor. It's always a festive afternoon of wonderful desserts, music, activities, and fellowship. For those interested, we are once again collecting new, unwrapped toys and books as holiday gifts for children at The Brooks, a short-term family housing center in our neighborhood. If you wish to participate, please bring your donation to the party and we'll make sure that they are delivered to the Brooks. It's yet another way that we demonstrate the power and impact of "neighbors helping neighbors."
There are many other upcoming programs throughout the month offered by community partners. For example, our member, Arlene Lutenegger will be featured at our December 8th Lunch & Learn program, where she will discuss what she learned when finding an assisted living residence for her husband. We'll go to DC's Holiday Market on December 11th, learn to play Mah Jongg on the 15th, have our usual Cards & Games Group on the 16th, and the Men's Lunch Group on December 29th. There are also many other activities sponsored by community partners, so I encourage you to peruse the various events and activities detailed below. Hopefully, there's something for everyone!
Finally, I want to let everyone know of some exciting news in advance of Giving Tuesday, which is coming up next week on Tuesday, December 2nd. Giving Tuesday promotes the concept of "generosity not as a benevolence that the haves show to the have-nots but rather an expression of mutuality, solidarity, and reciprocity." We are quite fortunate this year in that we have two individuals, one from Cleveland Park and another from Woodley Park, that have each agreed to provide the Village with $5,000 as a challenge to have our generous community match! That is, if we can collect $10,000 in donations, they will match it! We're hoping to generate $20,000 to support our Village programs, including free memberships to those with an annual income of $50,000 or less.
We'll remind you of this challenge on Tuesday. If possible, please consider giving to our Village so that we can continue to offer a variety of programs and expand our reach to even more older adults living in our neighborhood. Thank you, in advance, for your generosity!
