From Frank ... Oct 1

It’s hard for me to believe that Autumn is here, but indeed it is and so I’m trying to embrace it with Pumpkin spice lattes, chrysanthemums, and walks in Rock Creek Park where I can feel the fallen leaves under my feet. I have to do what I can to try to convince myself that I enjoy the season because in reality all I can think of is dreading what’s coming – winter! So, best to make the most of where we are.

Consider these Wellness Opportunities

The Village is sponsoring some wellness programs this month worth noting.

  • On Wednesday, October 13th we will again be partnering with Giant Pharmacy and The Broadmoor to hold an outdoor vaccination clinic. Giant pharmacists will be administering the flu shots, COVID vaccines (Moderna or Pfizer for the initial vaccines), Pfizer COVID booster, and pneumonia vaccines. Click here to find all of the details, including how to register and what documentation you’ll need to bring.

  • On Friday, October 15th at 2:30pm, we will partner with two community businesses to promote mobility improvement. Pivot Physical Therapy (located in Cleveland Park) will hold a fall prevention and balance assessment clinic that will be free of charge. The clinic will be held outside, under the patio tent, of California Tortilla located in Sam’s Park & Shop in Cleveland Park. Many thanks to both businesses for their donations of time and space in support of the Village. Space will be limited for this important event so please see the article on this event and register as soon as possible.

Join Our October Cultural Outing

Our October cultural outing will be to the National Arboretum to see the Fall colors and the iconic pillars that once supported the Capitol Building and now are situated on a hilltop forcing one to imagine the building. It’s quite impressive!

Also, mark your calendars for Tuesday, Oct. 19th, at 7 pm to hear Terence Samuel speak about Changes in Journalism Over a Lifetime in the News. This is a FREE virtual program for the community in partnership with the Cleveland Park Library, Woodley Park Main Street and Cleveland Park Main Street. Full details on the program can be found here.

Interested in Being a Village Volunteer?

Finally, a special note of thanks to our neighbors who answer the call to volunteer. We recently added a handful of new volunteers who are busy visiting people, driving members to and from medical appointments, and doing grocery runs, among many other things. If you know someone that might want to volunteer with us, our next orientation is Tuesday, October 5th at 5:30pm via Zoom. Interested individuals, including members who want to also volunteer, can register here.

Happy Fall everyone! I will be off at the end of next week, but Claire will be offering her thoughts and observations in this space in my absence.

Frank.
