“It’s the hap-happiest time of the year” croons Andy Williams in the Christmas classic. Maybe. But as I get older I can’t help being a little melancholy as I remember family and friends who are no longer with us. I’m sure I’m not alone.
I think especially of my father. Our relationship was a little fraught because he had left my sisters and me to be raised by our mom. But my fond memories were later in his life. He had taken up painting at some point and made a habit of compiling his favorite paintings into a printed calendar. Receiving that padded manila envelope in my mailbox each year for nearly two decades used to mean the Christmas season had officially begun.
Dad died suddenly of COVID two years ago, and I miss that official kick off gift. What helps me is talking about it, sharing with others, and relying on my community of friends and loved ones to just be with me. Again, I’m sure I’m not alone.
If you’re feeling a little down in what we’re told is the happiest time, I encourage you to reach out to the Village. Whether that’s the willing ear of a volunteer or staff member, the camaraderie of another member, or a phone call or visit from our licensed clinical social worker, Barbara Scott, we’re here for you.
New Suicide Prevention Hotline
Did you know that the federal government has a “Lifeline” number for suicide prevention? “998” is the number to dial for help in a crisis. The Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, offering prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals in the United States.
Order Your Village Christmas Dinner
Finally, for those celebrating Christmas and wishing to receive a holiday meal delivered on Christmas Eve, December 24th, please let us know by Tuesday, December 20th. Meals are limited to members only due to limited volunteers available during the season.
Warm wishes to all for a happy holiday season. Please note that the Village office will be closed on Monday, December 26th and January 2nd. For Members Plus that wish to request services of volunteers, please be sure to contact the office early (by calling 202-615-5853 or emailing info@CWPV.org) so that we can arrange for a volunteer to meet your need.
