From Frank ... | Dec 18

Next week, many people will celebrate Christmas. Regardless of one’s individual faith or belief system, the holidays are a time when we come together, support one another, and celebrate the everyday miracles of kindness and compassion that we receive from being in a community.

But some times the holidays are hard. This is my first holiday season without my adult son at home so I’ve found myself being rather “Cranky Frankie” at times. I bet many of you know what I'm feeling. If you find yourself frustrated, sad, or lonely please know that you’re not alone, and most importantly, that there’s a whole community here to support you.

For instance, last week marked my first time participating in a Village Chanukah festival with a group of members organized by board members, Sandy Rubin and Marjorie Dick Stuart. It was a wonderful and meaningful celebration where I learned about the miracle of the oil lasting for eight days and enjoyed the company of many friends.

And on Christmas Day, everyone is invited to a Zoom gathering with me and my family at noon. We can talk about the meaning of the day for us, special memories that we might have, and anything else that might bring a smile or a laugh. This year is certainly different and unprecedented but no one has to be alone. You can also just call into the Christmas gathering by dialing (301) 715-8592 then entering Meeting ID 826-2668-5178#.

And the Village is fortunate to have our short-term case manager, Barbara Scott, as a resource for any member that would like to talk. Just email or call the office at 202-615-5853 and we’ll put you in touch with her. Order your Christmas Meals

The Village has partnered with a Washington institution, Wagshal’s Market to provide meals for Christmas Eve (Thursday, December 24th). They are offering a fish, chicken or beef dish at a 15% discount to Village members.

To order call Wagshal’s Catering at 202-363-0777 and choose option 4 for catering. Let them know which entrée you’d like to order, pay for your order with a credit card, and be sure to tell them you’re with the Village to get your discount!

For members placing orders, we’ll have a volunteer deliver your meal in the late afternoon. Entrées can then be heated at home in an oven or microwave.

Happy holiday to everyone and I hope to see you on Friday, December 25 at noon for our next community gathering to celebrate Christmas. Of course, everyone is invited!
