From Frank ... its the people that matter.

One of my favorite July 4th memories is the Beach Boys concert that I attended on the National Mall in 1983. It was sweltering hot, of course, and I’d never been in such a large crowd. I was there with family friends – the Mohrmans – and we had tickets to the VIP area (and the best part about that was the easy access to the restrooms!).

I remember that concert today not because of the music (though the Beach Boys were great) but because I was there with lifelong family friends. I remember how the Mohrman family made me feel – included, special, and cared for. We had the chance to reconnect recently when they came to visit me and my mother as they did when we lived in Nova Scotia, and we reminisced about that concert. Sometimes what’s memorable about life’s experiences is who you experience them with.

Coming Up This Month

This month we’re featuring a few new programs that I hope you find enjoyable and perhaps memorable because I know you’ll find a caring community with our other village members. Here are some highlights:

  • The initial “Garden Club” meeting – July 5th at 4pm

  • Classical Music Performance in the Omni Shoreham garden – July 10th at 4pm

  • Photography “Safari” at Hillwood Estate – July 12th at 11am

  • Lunch Bunch at Lillies in Woodley Park – July 13th at 12pm

  • Tour of Planet Word – July 28th at 11:30am

Event details can be found by clicking calendar on our website.

Finally, if you’ve been reading our newsletter or coming to community events, please consider becoming a member. The more members we have, the more likely we are to form new “interest groups.” And a Village with a large membership makes a statement about the importance of older adults in our community. We’re fast approaching 200 members, but we have plenty of room to expand as our table is large and welcomes everyone. Membership is as easy as a few clicks on our website. Help us grow so the neighborhood will know that older adults are a vital thread in the fabric of our community.

Frank Finamore is Executive Director of the Village.
