From Frank ... a solemn beginning to summer

On any given year Memorial Day is a swirl of emotion, the solemnity of honoring our service members’ sacrifice mixed with the joy of relaxing family time. This year the weekend will be particularly heavy as our nation processes the terrible shock of the lives senselessly lost in Uvalde and Buffalo. I know you join me in honoring our service members for their commitment, dedication, and service in defense of our freedom and our fellow citizens who have lost so much, so unexpectedly.

With Memorial Day weekend we slide quickly into June and summer is here. And that means a new month of activities on deck for members. We’re excited to see our membership growing, but as it does the range of member interests is expanding. Your Village team is working hard to increase the number and variety of events so we can ensure there’s something of interest for everyone. We’re eager for volunteers to help plan and organize our active calendar, please send me an email if you are able to help. AND encourage your friends and neighbors to join as members.

Some Exciting Upcoming Events

  • Hear the candidates at a Ward 3 Council Member Forum address issues related to older adults on June 1 at 7pm. Hosted by IONA Senior Services and the Villages in Ward 3, the candidates will be asked about their priorities for older adults in Ward 3.

  • The tour of Tregaron Conservancy has been rescheduled for June 8th. Hear from our neighborhood expert, Tamara Belt, about the original plan for the garden and how the conservancy is honoring that vision as it pursues new improvements.

  • Walk with the Woodley Walkers every Thursday at 10am. Meet in front of Chipotle on the corner of Calvert Street and Connecticut Avenue, for a casual walk through the neighborhood.

  • Explore the history and treasures of the National Postal Museum on June 23rd at 11:30 followed by lunch outside at a nearby restaurant.

  • Learn about the 'Road to Recovery' to prepare for elective surgery (hip or knee replacement, etc.). The webinar will also discuss what to expect if you wind up in the emergency department after an accident. Join us on June 28th at 4pm!

  • On Wednesday, June 15th at 1pm, we will host an informational session on membership. If you’ve been reading the newsletter, attending community events, or otherwise enjoying the Village from the sidelines, come hear about our two types of membership and all that we offer. The session will be on the patio of Woodley Park Towers (near the intersection of Devonshire and Connecticut Avenue). Light refreshments will be served.

I wish you all a pleasant, restful and meaningful Memorial Day.
