From Frank...
February is here and no one is more anxious than yours truly for the groundhog to see his shadow on Monday. I don’t believe the prediction, but at this point, I’m desperate for any hope that this mess called winter might be over soon! Until then, please be careful if you are out and about, especially if you’re walking. Many of the sidewalks have a path through the ice (as does the east side of the Klingle bridge, but not the west side) but it’s the crosswalks which I find particularly dangerous. The above picture from this afternoon shows the icy, slushy situation at many (or perhaps most) crosswalks.
We have some great programs in store for February that I want to highlight for you, but as a reminder, we always have a virtual stretching class each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on Zoom at 10am. Given that many of us are confined to our homes at this point, why not spend a half-hour with our wonderful instructor, Beth Kaplan, and a cadre of regulars. It’s just a half-hour class but terrific to get the blood flowing and socialize a bit too. Because February is also Black History Month, we’ve arranged a very special trip to Frederick Douglass’s home in Anacostia. We will have a bus pick up to 12 folks from the Broadmoor at 11am and our first stop will be Bus Boys & Poets in Anacostia for lunch. Then, at 1, the bus will take everyone to the museum for a tour and then back to the Broadmoor.
The event is free to all members, except there will be separate checks for any lunch you may wish to purchase. Seating on the bus and tour is limited so please register as soon as possible. Note that Members Plus can also request a ride from a volunteer to meet the bus. We will also have our usual Lunch Bunch (this time at Cactus Cantina) and a very special Valentine’s Dinner at Meiwah in nearby Chevy Chase. This will be a $60 fixed-priced dinner for anyone that would like to spend the evening celebrating love and friendship with other Villagers! Also on Valentine’s Day, we are going to have a special training at the library at 2pm to show you how to use Lyft Silver.
This ride sharing app has several features, including large fonts, the ability to call for assistance, and have someone else notified when you’ve used the service. We think this ride sharing service might be helpful to many of you and to sweeten the deal, Lyft Silver will be giving us 100 coupons for $10 each. We will distribute those at the training and after as well to those members (either social or Members Plus) that request them. We hope it will be a great addition to the other transportation options so that everyone can get where they want to go. (Please note that Members Plus may still request rides from volunteers. This new Lyft Silver option does not replace our existing transportation services.)
Please be on the lookout for your February calendar in the mail which lists all these events and more. We will also be emailing letters acknowledging donations made to the Village in 2025. These letters will be from our info@cwpv.org address. We will happily send you a hard-copy letter as well, if you prefer.
Stay safe and warm. Read all the news from the Village right here. I hope to see you at one of our February events!
