Weekly Village News for August 14, 2026

From Frank...As the youngest of seven, I grew up listening to music that spanned decades. Some of my favorites included listening to the Andrew Sisters' "Chattanooga Choo Choo", Anne Murray's "Snowbird", The Beatles "Hey Jude", Peter, Paul and Mary's "Leaving on a Jet Plane", and Carole King's "I Feel the Earth Move." The console stereo was featured prominently in our living room, and I'd lie on the plush carpet and wait to hear each album drop, the needle slides over, and that delightful scratchy sound just before the song would start. I found myself transfixed by the music, even as a young child. The music was soothing somehow and hearing live music is something I still enjoy very much.

In the next few weeks, we have several opportunities to enjoy some live music. First, next Friday, August 21, at 2pm in the Village Square, we're having a "Community Music Jam." This event is open to anyone in the community to come and perform for others or just sit back and enjoy the music. This is sort of an open mic situation so come play us a song, if you're so inclined.

Later in the month, on Sunday, August 30th at 3pm at Tregaron Conservancy, we're co-sponsoring a concert by Son Cubano Subterraneo on the scenic Shipman Terrace at Tregaron Conservancy, near the lily pond. You can register for the event by clicking here. The six-piece ensemble brings the musical sounds of Cuba's golden era (1950-60s) to life. They are top-notch musicians and entertainers with a shared passion for Cuban "Son", the musical style at the core of Latin's Salsa dance music.

Their sound includes authentic Cuban instruments and a deep repertoire of styles, tempos and songs from all the greats including Buena Vista Social Club, Beny More, Arsenio Rodriguez, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Oscar D'Leon, and many others. Please note that this concert is open to everyone in the community and guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets. We have a limited number of folding chairs that we can make available, so please indicate if you will need a chair when you register.

"Three-quarters of people age 50 to 80 say music helps them relieve stress or relax and 65% say it helps their mental health or mood", according to the new results from the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging. Meanwhile, 60% say they get energized or motivated by music! So, I hope you'll consider joining us for one or both of these upcoming musical events. Here are all the August events and programs listed right here.

PS Since I wrote that opening paragraph above, I keep hearing Carole King's voice in my head, belting out "I feel the earth move under my feet, I feel the sky come tumbling down, I feel my heart start trembling...". Anyone else hear that?
