Village News for May 24, 2024

From Frank Finamore [Executive Director, Cleveland & Woodley Park News]

On Monday, we will honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Although many “celebrate” the informal beginning of summer, I hope that we’re each able to take a few minutes to somehow honor and thank those who died while serving in the armed services.

We’re also bringing a close to May, which is Older Americans Month. This year’s theme is Powered by Connection, which recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. Perhaps helping older adults make connections is what Villages do best. Whether it’s between two members talking during Lunch Bunch, a member and a volunteer chatting while driving to an appointment, a volunteer talking to a neighbor at the farmer’s market about the Village, or a member talking to a community member at a Sunday Supper, we’re making connections. I’ve been privileged to be the Executive Director for four and a half years now, and I truly feel blessed to know so many of my neighbors now (since I live in Woodley Park and walk to work in Cleveland Park.) My life is certainly richer because of the interactions that I have with so many that I don’t know if I’d have met otherwise.

So, as we close out the month and honor our fallen soldiers on this Memorial Day, my heart is full of gratitude. Wishing everyone a safe, reflective, and meaningful long weekend.
