ICYMI: Last week's Village News from August 16, 2024

I don’t know about you, but for me, one of the most memorable things about summer as a kid was the bell of the ice cream truck ringing. It induced an immediate panic because I knew there was only a limited time to find some coins and run out to the street, usually in my bare feet, before the truck disappeared. My favorite was the standard cherry “ice pop” primarily because it was the cheapest and I could usually find a quarter behind the cushion of the sofa. Without any proof, I remain convinced that my grandfather, Pop Pop as my sisters and I called him, intentionally left his spare change in the seat cushions for me and my sisters to find. It was his way.

Although we won’t have a truck, we will have a summer ice cream party on Wednesday, August 28th from 2 until 4pm at All Souls Episcopal, located at 2300 Cathedral Avenue. I hope that our members and volunteers will join us for this annual party. It’s a great way to connect with friends, meet new members, and just enjoy a cone or cup of your favorite flavor! Special thanks to Sandy Rubin and an anonymous donor for sponsoring this event! We also have a few other events that I hope you’ll consider attending, including:

  • Saturday, August 24th at 4pm, come hear Gold Bug Revival on the beautiful green oasis of the Rosedale Conservancy. (Upon registering, please let us know if you need a chair. We will also have volunteers on hand to help everyone traverse the lawn safely.) You can visit the band’s website here.

Finally, a request for you. I serve on the Task Force to establish a center for older adults in Ward 3. I’d love to hear your thoughts about what type of activities and/or amenities you’d hope such a center would offer. Perhaps most importantly, I’d love to hear your thoughts about where in Ward 3 you’d like the center to be located or how far you’d be willing to travel to get to the center. There will be a survey sent out in the coming months about it, but I’d love to hear your thoughts. If you have a few minutes, please send me an email with your input. I love hearing from folks and learning about what would make DC an even greater place.
