Monthly Village News for February 2025

Writer's picture: VillageVillage

Earlier this week, we sent out an email to our supporters about our “Big Wins” for 2024. In short, I’m so proud of our accomplishments. Our dedicated Village volunteers provided 1,897 services, nearly a 20% increase over the number of services provided in 2023. That’s a lot of rides, tech support, deliveries, and errands! Additionally, we made more than 1,000 calls and visits to more isolated older adults to help keep them connected.

We also brought on 44 new members in 2024 and had a high of 241 members. To ensure that our social, wellness, and educational programs are accessible to everyone, including those with limited means, our Board approved 20 free social memberships to individuals with annual incomes lower than $50,000. It only involves completing an application and then a confidential conversation with me. Of course, we also offer free Members Plus memberships (which allows an individual to receive services from our volunteers) to those with limited incomes.

There’s so much to be proud about, but we’re not resting on our laurels because there’s always more we can do to better serve older adults in our neighborhoods. In February, we’ll continue our new line dancing class every Friday at 1pm in Adas Israel Congregation’s Youth Room. Because it’s the month of Valentine’s Day, we’ll also have a special Lunch Bunch at The Broadmoor on Wednesday, the 12th at noon.  serve sandwiches and homemade soups as well as some fun activities and, of course, desserts.

February’s Tuesday Talk will showcase fun facts about the history of Connecticut Avenue and our cultural event will be a visit to The People’s House, a new cutting-edge educational experience located just one block from the White House. The educational museum tells the story of the Executive Mansion, its inhabitants and the people who have dedicated their careers to its functions. Of course, we’ll also have stretching classes, the weekly walking group, book clubs, French conversation group, games group, and our new dial-in social whereby you just dial a 202 number and you’re on a conference call with other members. This month we’ll talk about school memories. I’ll be facilitating the call, and to entice you to attend, you might ask me about the time I was almost sent to the principal’s office!

My hope for this year, and for February in particular, is that subscribers who are not yet members, will join us. We’re a fun, engaging community of neighbors helping neighbors and having fun with neighbors! There should be a fun activity or event to meet every interest. I hope to see you at an activity soon.

All the news and programs for February are here.
